Phoenix Man Suspected of Killing His Wife and Himself

A man is suspected of killing his wife and himself on Sunday morning moments after she called police for help regarding domestic violence. 



Phoenix police found a couple dead in their home near 39th Avenue and Baseline Road after Syeda Sohaly Akter initially called about a verbal argument with her husband, Abul Ahsan Habib and then called police again when he returned.


Police operator heard gunshots on the phone and, when police arrived at the house, they located the couple dead with gunshot wounds, according to Phoenix police spokesperson Sgt. Tommy Thompson. 


Police are investigating the shooting as a possible murder-suicide and believe Habib may have fatally shot Akter.  About 9:26 a.m., Police responded to a report of an argument at the couple's home.


Police spoke with Akter and her adult son for about 15 minutes, but Habib had left before officers arrived. Akter told police she was in a verbal argument with her husband and that she wanted him to move out.


Police told the woman and son if Habib came back that they should call the police. After the police initially left, the son also left. When the officer spoke with the Akter and the son, they believed the situation would be OK.


Five minutes after police left, police received another 911 call from Akter, who was in the process of saying Habib was at the home when the police operator heard what sounded like gunshots and did not receive any further information.


Phoenix police returned to the scene at about 9:51 a.m., assembled a crisis entry team based on the information from the call, went inside the house and located Akter and Habib with gunshot wounds and gun was also recovered on the scene.


Thompson said he expects the investigation to continue for hours and will provide updates as they become available. 


In August, Phoenix police said the number of deaths involving domestic violence more than doubled in the first six months of this year.
